So you want to be a writer…Here’s how you get started!

So you want to be writer, huh? Well join the club. There are millions of people out there that want to write but the fact of the matter is they don’t. I read in a New York Times article that 81% of Americans actually want to write. Wow! That number made sense to me because we are all unique human beings and we all have a story to tell, a story that is our own, and experiences that no one else shares. Surprisingly, while 81% of Americans want to write, only about 2% actually do. You may wonder why such a small number… Well, it’s simple. Most of us want to write but don’t know how to start. It’s not that writing is this terribly hard thing that no one knows how to do. It’s just that no one may have told you how simple the process is. Well, if they haven’t, let me be the first. Writing is insanely easy, once you have inspiration and you know exactly what you want to say. There is no secret to getting started, you just do it! You simply just start writing. And you continue writing until you get to the end of your story.

Okay, okay, there IS more to it than that. But if you can accomplish just that first step and simply be consistent with it, you will be surprised at how much writing you can get done in 30 days. Just do it! Break out your calendar, pencil in time to write at least 3 days a week and commit. Write. You can find inspiration from anywhere and you can write about anything. Some places to find inspiration to write:

  • your surroundings
  • outside
  • books
  • blogs
  • news
  • magazines
  • your personal story
  • someone else’s experience
  • love
  • pain
  • curiosity
  • your children
  • work

No matter what you write about the key is to just write. Get into the practice of writing and eventually it will become a cinch. Just like anything else you have to make a habit.

We want to know! What inspires you to write?
